MASTER #2

INFLAMMATION AND INFLAMMATORY DISEASES

MASTER 2 Specialty – Organised by INFLAMEX

BEARER ESTABLISHMENT :
- University of Paris

LIVING TOGETHER :
- University Sorbonne Paris Nord

MENTION : Molecular and Cellular Biology
SPECIALTY : Inflammation and Inflammatory Diseases (IID)

Presentation

The master 2 « Inflammation and inflammatory diseases » aims at educating new generations of high-level researchers in the field of inflammation. This master specialty offers a transdisciplinary approach to the study of inflammatory process at the interface between fundamental research, applied and clinical research.

The « Inflammation and inflammatory diseases » (IID) master 2 program is opened to students of French universities with a master 1 degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology and/or Biochemistry. It is also accessible to Pharmacy, Medical, Odontology students, students from the “grandes écoles” or Veterinary schools who hold a degree in Life science. The Master 2 also welcomes European graduate Students who can justify of a good knowledge of molecular and cellular basis of Inflammation and immunology.

A specific program is proposed to foreign European students to help them settle in Paris during the Actors of Inflammations. Thus, we offer housing at the Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris and French lessons at the Alliance Française in Paris. Lectures organized by Inflamex are given in English.

The master 2 IID covers the following topics:

  • Actors of inflammation
  • Biological mechanisms of Inflammation
  • Inflammation and pathologies
  • Pathological interventions in inflammatory diseases
  • Analysis of scientific articles

EDUCATIONAL GOALS

The Inflammation and Inflammatory Diseases (IID) Master 2 program is open to European students who already possess a strong background on the biology and mechanisms and molecular aspects of inflammation and immunology. Applicant (Graduates students) should justify of a good knowledge of molecular and cellular basis of Inflammation and immunology

Competencies expected at the end of training

Skills in terms of scientific knowledge.

• Acquire and master the molecular and cellular mechanisms of inflammation. Understanding how these mechanisms contribute to the development of diseases inflammatory humans.

• Acquire the knowhow in the study of inflammatory processes.

Skills in terms of ability:
Students from this course have acquired skills :

• to problematize and drive good science
• looking for work placement (cover letter, interview)
• to work in a professional environment (internship in the laboratory)
• written and oral dissemination of scientific information (analysis of articles) and results scientists from their work (research internship)

CONTENT & TEACHING TEAM

The Master 2 Inflammation and inflammatory diseases academic year is composed of 2 parts:

  • A theoretical part (October-December)
  • A practical part (January-June)

Lectures are given by French and European researchers and clinicians experts in the field of inflammation.

Each year, Inflamex invites more than 10% of European lecturer and 50% of non-Inflamex French lecturer.

The theoretical part is divided of into 6 parts (Teaching Units, UE) :

Master 2 : General Teaching Units - UE1 "Tronc commun" (10 ECTS)

General UE (not organised by Inflamex)
Responsable : Fernando Rodriguez‐Lima
Content : 70 hours

Goals :

  • Lectures on diverse biological questions to deepen the scientific and technical culture of students.
  • Lectures on carreer development : the biotechnology market and jobs, CV writing and job interview,…
Master 2 : Specific Teaching Units - UE2 "Actors of Inflammation" (5 ECTS)

Responsable : Renato Monteiro
Content :  50 hours

Goals:
This Teaching Unit introduces general principles of inflammation and its effector mechanisms. A focus is put on the description of innate and adaptive immune systems. A thorough description of the various cellular actors of inflammation, of receptors and mediators of the inflammatory response will also be given through the use of examples arising directly from laboratory research.

  • Effectors and targets of Inflammation (bacteries, viruses)
  • Mechanisms of the immune evasion
  • Cellular actors of the adaptive immunity
  • Cellular actors of the innate immunity
  • Molecular mediators of immunity
  • Role and function of the mucosal barrier
  • Innate immunity and pathologies
Master 2 : Specific Teaching Units - UE3 "Biological mechanisms of inflammation" (5 ECTS)

Responsable : Ulrich Blank
Content : 50 hours

Goals:
This UE provides students with an insight on cellular mechanisms (phagocytosis, exocytosis, apoptose, autophagy, …) and on few tissue responses (clotting, fibrogenesis) involved in the inflammatory reaction. Mode of actions will be presented through specific examples. Mathematical modelling of inflammation and biological processes will also be addressed.

  • Effectors and targets of Inflammation (bacteries, viruses)
  • Mechanisms of the immune evasion
  • Cellular actors of the adaptive immunity
  • Cellular actors of the innate immunity
  • Molecular mediators of immunity
  • Role and function of the mucosal barrier
  • Innate immunity and pathologies
Master 2 : Specific Teaching Units - UE4 "Inflammation and organ specific pathologies" (4 ECTS)

Responsables : Agnès Lehuen et Luc Mouthon
Content : 40 hours

Goals:
From the basis of inflammation, and using specific examples, this UE aims at explaining the importance and the impact of inflammation in human pathologies with an emphasis on organ specifc diseases.

  • Gut (IBD)
  • Liver (hepatitis et cirrhosis)
  • Lung (asthma et fibrosis)
  • Kidney (glomerulonephritis)
  • Vascular inflammation (vascularite, lupus)
  • Articulation(Polyarthritis, spondylarthritis)
  • Skin (sclerodermia)
  • Thyroïdes (Thyroïdites)
  • Lipid metabolism (obesity et diabete)
  • Central nervous system (EAE)
  • Auto-inflammatory syndroms
Master 2 : Specific Teaching Units - UE5 "Pathological interventions in inflammatory diseases " (3 ECTS)

Responsable :  Luc Mouthon
Content : 30 hours

Goals:
This Teaching Unit presents actual and future therapeutic strategies to treat inflammatory diseases.

Mechanisms of action, posology, indications and side effects of corticoïds, of immunosupressors, of biotherapy and of intravenous immunoglobulins in the treatment of inflammatory diseases will be presented.

Master 2 : Specific Teaching Units - UE6 "Analysis of scientific articles" (3 ECTS)

Responsable : Dominique Ledoux
Content: 10 hours and personal work

Goals:
This Teaching Unit aims at helping students to read and analyse scientific articles, and to communicate orally the take-home message of articles.

Master 2 : Practical Part  " Laboratory training " (30 ECTS)

A 6-month traineeship will take place during the 2nd semester of the academic year

Training will be evaluated via a master thesis and an oral exam.

Host laboratories :

  • Inflamex partner laboratories
  • Other laboratories working in the field of inflammation (upon agreement by the Inflamex teaching committee)

To improve our program, students are requested to evaluate each teaching unit and each lecture. We also develop a follow-up questionnaire to keep in touch with our previous students.

Ten out of eleven students of the first promotion of the IMI M2 master sent back the questionnaire in December 2014.
